One of my passions, since childhood, is anything that has to do with art: painting, drawing, ceramics - even sewing can be an art form. I started sewing in junior high school. My first project was a sleeveless shift. I progressed from there to clothing and eventually other items such as quilts. Then life, work, family, and graduate school came along and occupied my life. Just 3 years ago I started quilting again. As a semi-retired college teacher, I look forward to the hours I can explore fabrics and think about what to create next. My favorite part of quilting is the interaction of colors. Also, there are many skills to learn and I continue to learn more with each quilt. Most rewarding is when a quilt finds a new home and family to enjoy. Color is what inspires me the most. I enjoy studying colors in nature such as birds, the ocean, and sunsets. As a seasonal Visitor Educator for the North Carolina Zoo, animal themes find their way into my quilts as well. I use high-quality fabrics, mostly batiks. The vibrant colors and interesting patterns of batiks can add stunning effects to a quilt. Other items I've made include tote bags, table runners, dog coats, eyeglass cases, cosmetic bags, or other practical items. All quilted of course! I do not use kits, preferring to choose the colors and fabrics myself. If I use applique and fusing, I draw the shapes myself. Sometimes I use a standard type of quilt pattern such as a braid, while other times I create something unique. - My art quilt pattern, "Under The Sea", was published in the April 2016 issue of "The Quilt Pattern Magazine". This wall hanging features fish made from children's handprints. The fish are swimming between the reeds under the ocean. A sunburst above the sea is also made of handprints. The shore features sea shells and starfish. The pattern is easy to customize for your family, classroom, or a fanciful ocean scene.
Our home is smoke-free and our pet is of the outdoors variety.

Asian-Inspired Braid

Asian-Inspired Braid
Size: 78.5 x 90 inches (Twin, Double/Full, or Queen Size).
Description: This quilt started as the 2 flowered squares (seen in the middle of the quilt). Over the course of a year, 15 Asian-inspired fabrics caught my eye during travels around my home State of North Carolina. I knew that when I had enough the result would be a beautiful quilt. The pattern is a French braid. Several of the fabrics shimmer with golden threads. Bright colors make up each of the 5 braids: gold, yellow, pink, black, orange, and a splash of green. Some neutral-toned fabrics keep the quilt balanced. The wide binding down the long sides is dark black with golden threads. On the ends is a band with dragonflies in golden threads on beige background. Quilted on a machine, all free form: the large middle, neutral squares have a stitched flower like the golden motif on the orange fabric. Other quilting is in a meandering design. Each of the small diamonds that go down the braids are quilted in a straight line around the border of the diamond. The large border is quilted in simple leaves. There are 5 braids, the outer braids are alike, the inner braids are alike the the middle braid is unique. The braids are mostly similar, which gives visual interest to the quilt as a whole. There is 9-10" drop on each side. Photo shows quilt on a queen bed, where it can serve as a coverlet. The backing is a plain, off-white cotton.
I cut the pieces, sew them, and free-hand, free-motion quilt and finish it myself. Non-smoking home and outdoor pets.
Technique: Machine Pieced. Machine Quilted.

Cuddly Cubs
Size: 44 x 50 inches (Baby, Crib, Child, or Wall Size)
Description: Soft and furry lion and tiger cubs in natural colors, are the theme of this quilt. The cub portraits are from printed fabric. All else is pieced from 10 different fabrics. Colors are tans and greens like the grasslands (lions) and jungles (tigers) these cats live in. - The other colors are browns, reds, and purple accents. The back is a single piece of dotted fabric in neutral colors. The paw prints are actual size! The were hand-drawn and cut, then fused (appliqued) onto the quilt. If you see these in person, you will find it amazing to compare the cub-size paw print to an adult cat paw print - quite a difference! - This is an original design inspired by my years of summer work for the education department at the North Carolina Zoological Park - the largest natural habitat zoo in the United States. It is a wonderful park, and inspiring to be near so many special species of animals as well as educating others about them.
If you would like to use this as a wallhanging, let me know and I will add a pocket (long and narrow for a hanging rod) onto the back at no extra charge.
Technique: Machine Pieced. Quilted by machine: free hand, free motion. Designs are grassy leaf patterns and free-flowing lines like the wind blowing through the grass. Each cub portrait is quilted around the head. Binding is machine-sewn through the layers and hand-stitched to the backing.

Frolicking Whales
Size: 15 x 38 inches (Wall Size)
Description: Who is chasing whom? One whale splashes up while the other dives under a wave showing only its tail. The vivid colors on this wall hanging will brighten up any wall in your home or office! - This is a re-purposed Furoshiki from Japan. I handpick and order Furoshiki directly from Japan, so this is the genuine article. Furoshiki is an art form that only a few Japanese are continuing through new uses. In the past, Furoshiki were used for wrapping gifts or making belts and headbands. This one has been re-purposed into a banner. The bright colors are various shades of blue: dark, royal, light and red, yellow and white. Quilting outlines each whale and some of the details on the whales. The sun and waves are outlined and highlighted with quilting.
Ready to hang! Includes a wooden dowel painted white at the top, and a wooden dowel on the lower back (covered in blue fabric) for weight. Both dowels are easily removed if you prefer not to use them.

Ocean Waves

Ocean Waves
Size: 72 x 94 inches (Twin, Double/Full or Queen Coverlet Size)
Description: Let your dreams sail away under this quilt of ocean colors. The colors of each braid change from dark purple - suggesting the deep ocean - to various shades of blue, to hints of yellow on green-blue. It's just like the sun sparkling on the ocean waves as they hit the shore on a sunny day. Waves foam with white accents where braids meet. The quilting is like the tide - the waves roll in and the quilted ripples are the tidal current pulling the waves back out. There are swirls in the blue triangles in the middle of the quilt, and swirls along the white part of the border. The border of this quilt is in 4 layers - just like ripples of the water go on and on, so does this quilt. There is an edge of deep purple, then blue, white and one more. The "one more" looks like green but has two rows of diagonal pieces. Its hard to describe but it's quite an interesting border by repeating all the fabrics in the braids in very small amounts. You can see it in one of the photos. This quilt is a result of a collection of my favorite fabrics - gathered over a year from various places. For me, color drives the direction of a quilt's design, and this one drove me straight to the beach. The ocean is such a compelling and wondrous as well as relaxing place. I hope you find all these bound up in this quilt. Fabrics were chosen by me, washed, dried, then cut and sewn together on my old but faithful sewing machine. By the way, if you love batiks, you'll love this quilt - the front is made entirely of batiks.
Can be used for a twin bed, a double bed or coverlet for a queen bed (add a bed skirt). Photo is shown on a queen-size bed. There is a 7" drop on each side of the queen bed. Non-smoking home and outdoor pet.
Technique: Machine Pieced. Machine Quilted. Quilting was all free-motion and and freehand.
Fabrics: 100% cotton batiks for the front. 100% soft cotton for the back.
Batting: Warm and Natural 87.5% Natural Cotton & 12.5% Polypropylene. Needle-Punched.
Care: Machine wash on the delicate cycle in cool water. No bleach. Dray on low setting and remove immediately.

Sunburst on Sunburst

Designer: Bette Beane

Sunburst on Sunburst
Size: 104 x 104 inches (Double/Full, King, or Queen Size)
Description: Striking colors in French Braids are set apart by triangles of blue. Other blends and shapes complete this unique design. Batik fabrics are used throughout. This quilt is my own design. After making several traditional French Braid quilts of all sizes, this design came to mind. It was a process over several months finding fabrics, designing the areas between the braids, and making it become a reality. The result was better than I had imagined! The Braids are placed around a center as a sunburst. The quilting design is flickering flames of the sun from the center out, including the borders. Colors: cranberry, chocolate, gold, along with some dark green, black, and gray-blue, and many shades of colors in between. All fabric is washed and dried before cutting. The back is one piece with narrow panels on two sides. The fabric was treated with Retayn, so that colors won't bleed when the quilt is washed. Quilt is shown on a queen-size bed and has a drop of 22 inches on each side.
This quilt recently won First Place at the Randolph Quilters' Guild Show in the First Judged Quilt category.
Technique: Machine Pieced. Machine Quilted. Small stitches are used for stability and durability.
Fabrics: 100% Cotton
Batting: Warm and Natural 87.5% Natural Cotton & 12.5% Polypropylene
Care: Machine wash with cold water on the gentle cycle. Machine dry on low and remove immediately when dry.

Waterfall Splash

Waterfall Splash
Size: 49 x 57 inches (Lap/Throw or Wall Size)
Description: A delightful scene of fish splashing in a waterfall is the theme of this genuine, Japanese printed art. This panel is a Furoshiki, which is a form of Japanese art that is also functional. It is original art printed on 100%, high-quality cotton. The subject of this scene is carp, a fish popular in Japan. - I purchased this Furoshiki directly from Kyoto, Japan, and it is a large size. Furoshiki come in mostly smaller or longer sizes to be used for such items as Obi (a belt for a kimono) or to wrap a gift. Furoshiki are washable. Colors do not run. This one was washed, dried in a dryer, and ironed before becoming a quilt. - Colors: dark/medium/light blue, golden tan, white, gray. Red accent is in the border. - The large carp is 22 inches long and the second carp is 19 inches long. - In the borders you will find a dark blue with silver leaf batik, red cotton, and a batik of beige with white droplets. The outer edges of the original print are included in the borders to blend them with the print, rather than just adding borders to the sides. - The narrow red binding is hand-sewn to the back of the quilt. All other borders were sewn by machine.
If you purchase this as a wall-hanging, I will add a rod pocket to the back of the quilt, at no extra charge. It will be the blue fabric used for the backing. It will be hand-stitched to the back of the quilt. The edges will have been turned under and machine sewn. - A personalized label can be made and hand-sewn to the back of the quilt. No extra charge!
Technique: Machine sewn and quilted except for the back of the narrow red borders at the top and bottom of the quilt. Those were sewn by hand. - The quilting was done by machine, with small stitches, and is extensive. The quilting either blends with, or accents the lines and details of the print. To achieve this, 5 thread colors were used: dark blue, light blue, gray, light wheat and white. Only near the borders is the quilting obvious and easy to see as it trickles through printed shapes to the binding.
Fabrics: 100% Cotton
Batting: Polyester
Care: Machine wash, gentle, cool water, mild detergent. Dry on low and remove immediately.
Price: $ 167.00 U.S. + Shipping & Insurance
